St Peter’s Church CNI
Rebuilding a 1947-year-old Church at a minimal budget
“The church is not just a building; it is the collective faith of its congregation.”
Bishop Paritosh Canning
St. Peter’s Church was instituted in 1947 in a shed within the premises of the Oxford Mission. In 2017 church secretary Suvobrata Das and Reverend Sebastian approached us to rebuild the church as the shed structure had crumbled and the congregation had grown from 100 to 800. We addressed the aspirations of the congregation and the extremely tight budget with a 3600 sqft aesthetic steel structure with the volumetric modelling of the roof progressively highlighting the three spatial sections of the entrance vestibule, congregational area and altar. The gable at the east end culminated in a large glass cross which streamed the morning sun rays over the crucifix at the altar.
The church stands not just as a physical replacement of a dilapidated shed but as a symbol of collective faith and resilience. Designed on a minimal budget of approximately 40 lakhs, it is the lowest-cost CNI church in India, and yet it carries a quiet grandeur rooted in light, air, and simplicity. The steel structure allowed for a generous height and span, while fly ash bricks at the eaves and aluminium-framed glass at the gables kept both weight and cost minimal. A narrow skylight runs along the ridge of the roof, infusing the nave with natural light, while long windows on the north and south facades bring in the essential southern breeze that cools the humid Kolkata air.
To further reduce internal heat gain, we proposed a secondary bamboo ceiling below the GI sheet roof, designed to create an air channel for passive ventilation—a strategy yet to be completed due to lack of funds. The flooring began with a simple IPS finish and was later upgraded with marble and tiles. The altar was enriched with antique elements like a baptismal font and lectern gifted by the CNI. The project’s emotional crescendo came on 6th December 2019, when the new church was inaugurated and its
