House by the Canal

Contemporary curved villa in suburban Kolkata

“I love it how everyone in the neighbourhood refers to it as Jahazbari.”

–Kaushik Bhattacharya (Client)

Set along the Bankra Canal in Birati, this two-storey bungalow is designed as a seamless blend of Bengal’s traditional architecture and modern comfort. The curved rooflines echo the region’s thatched huts, while the open layout maximizes cross-ventilation, natural light, and thermal comfort—essential in Kolkata’s humid climate.

Locally sourced brick and concrete define the structure, shaped by skilled artisans. The design prioritizes both function and experience—a sculptural staircase without straight lines, a private north-south

Built for a family with a young child, four dogs, and an aquarium, the home balances openness with privacy. Every element, from air vents to curved facades, is crafted for effortless living, proving that thoughtful architecture isn’t just about space—it’s about how life unfolds within it.
