Our client was fond of the Sabekiyana. Hence, we conserved the existing Red cemented floors, louvred Khorkhori wooden windows, glass panes, clerestory cement Jallis, Kori Borga beam structure and the tiny Ghulghuli air vents. We brought a modern touch with a small elevator, sizeable spaces for living, dining and kitchen, a small patio with a garden, attached bathrooms and walk-in closets with the bedrooms. The inheritance furniture was restored including an assortment of chairs, sofas, cabinets and tables in the mid-century style to their original colour and finish. The damaged laminate backs and seats of the dining chairs were replaced with fabric in a Bauhaus pattern to match the retro theme of the dining space.
Television cabinets were reused as a console in the living room and a bookcase in the main bedroom as was an old sewing machine! A treasure trove of Mukherjee’s silver jubilee memento clocks was proudly displayed in the living room along with calligraphic certificates from the Association of Film-Editors, Bombay. The client’s own art collection included Patachitra, Thangka, Kalamkari and Sand paintings, mirror mosaic art, oil on canvas and even artwork created with postage stamps. All were roped in the
