The Rock Villa
Balance of Art Deco & Contemporary Design
“When the mind becomes the
space, a temple is created”
– Ar. Monica Khosla Bhargava
The Rock Villa spread over four floors and 9600 square feet, is situated on a 475 sqm plot in the upscale New Alipore area of Kolkata. The clients requested a contemporary design inspired by our Skylight house, particularly appreciating the pairing of vertical light with horizontal ventilation. During discussions, they introduced their intricately carved Art Deco furniture, prompting us to find a way to balance these two styles.
To unify the design, we centred the villa around a 36-foot high atrium that serves as a core for light and space across the three upper floors, linked by a glass-walled stair hall. Natural light enters from the stairway on the east, while narrower windows control the harsher western light. The textured travertine marble on the west wall evokes weathered rock, and copper sculptures titled ‘The Family’ enhance the space. We incorporated classical polygon shapes in the atrium and staircase to harmonise the contemporary style with the Art Deco elements. At the same time, a decorative balustrade tied the spaces together with their furniture collection.
