Kham Studio

Repurposing a ‘1978’ house

“New lease of life”

- Kakoli Poddar, Society Interiors

In just two months, we refurbished a 1978 Calcutta house by preserving its structure and removing the internal walls to create a collaborative office space. Our office spans 2,500 square feet over three floors: a gallery on the ground floor, a studio on the first floor, and a library on the top floor. The gallery showcases our work and serves as a meeting space for clients. The studio features an open layout where the design team operates, while the top floor houses our well-catalogued material library, where we develop mood boards and models.

Working within a tight budget, we made minimal changes after confirming the building's structural integrity. Our studio also emphasises upcycling, incorporating restored teakwood windows, wood slats, and a reception table made from discarded firewood. The colour scheme, featuring the terracotta of brick and the grey of concrete, reflects our aesthetic and professional material palette.

Natural light in older structures can be limited, so we enhanced illumination in the studio with stretch ceilings to create an airy, open courtyard feel.
